Marian McPartland (1918, 2011) was a pianist and composer who shaped the sound of modern jazz through decades of innovation and mentorship. British-born and trained classically, she moved to the United States and became a central figure in jazz piano, known for her lyrical touch, harmonic sophistication, and ability to dialogue with any ensemble. Beyond her own recordings and performances, McPartland hosted the longest-running jazz radio program in history, "Piano Jazz," where she interviewed and played alongside virtually every major jazz figure of the late 20th century, making her a keeper of jazz tradition and a bridge between generations.
