About the Composer: Erik Morales

Erik Morales was born in New York City in 1966 and began composing during his high school years in south Florida, when his former band director commissioned him to arrange music for the marching ensemble. He went on to study composition at Florida International University and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette in 1989. Since entering the educational music publishing world in 2002, Morales has amassed over 150 published works spanning wind, orchestral, jazz, and chamber settings, with his compositions performed and recorded internationally.

Trumpet is Morales's primary instrument, and he has made significant contributions to the trumpet repertoire through ensemble works that have earned first place honors at the 2006 and 2008 National Trumpet Competitions. His Concerto for Trumpet in C and Piano premiered at the 2009 International Trumpet Guild conference, and a consortium-commissioned Concerto for Two Trumpets debuted at the 2013 ITG conference. Throughout his career, Morales has maintained a careful balance between artistic integrity and educational value, earning induction into the Louisiana Association for Jazz Education's Hall of Fame in 2016.
