More about this title

About the Composer: Kathy Holmes

Kathy Holmes

Kathy Holmes grew up at the piano keyboard and pursued formal training from age seven onward. She earned a degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College in California before dedicating herself to raising three children, keeping daily piano practice woven through that season of life.

Holmes began her second career in her forties, returning to formal music study and earning a Bachelor's degree in Music from Hiram College in Ohio. She now teaches piano and composes actively in the greater Cleveland area, drawing support and artistic encouragement from her involvement with The Western Reserve Piano Teachers, a professional community of dedicated musicians.

Why we love this

Winter Moon succeeds because it demands real musicianship without overwhelming an intermediate player. The balance between lyrical melody and carefully voiced accompaniment teaches voice independence naturally, while the delicate rhythmic details (16th-note passages and triplets) reward careful attention to the printed score.

What to expect

Winter Moon evokes quiet introspection and romantic longing. The D major key and broken-chord accompaniment create an intimate, almost nocturne-like atmosphere, while the delicate 16th-note ornaments suggest moonlight flickering through bare branches.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to explore lyrical expression and voice balance. This solo suits students who have developed secure technique but are still building their ability to sustain a singing line while managing supporting textures.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melody with a singing tone while keeping the left hand's broken fifth and octave accompaniment transparent; these chords support but never dominate.
  • Practice the 16th-note passages and triplets separately at a slow tempo to secure accuracy before integrating them into the flowing melodic line.
  • Study the musical markings as compositional instructions, not decorations; each dynamic and articulation choice shapes the wistful character Holmes intends.

How to use it

Program this as a recital piece that bridges technique and artistry, or pair it with contrasting seasonal works for a winter-themed concert. At four pages, it fits naturally into a student recital alongside a more energetic or dramatic piece.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing melody and accompaniment in both hands simultaneously
  • Executing 16th-note passages and 16th-note triplets with rhythmic precision
  • Sustaining lyrical phrasing and musical expression across a longer solo form
  • Interpreting and applying romantic-style musical markings for expressive depth
