About the Arranger: Deke Sharon

Deke Sharon

Deke Sharon began his professional music career at age 8, touring North America and performing alongside Luciano Pavarotti in operatic productions. He fundamentally transformed modern a cappella by developing the dense, layered vocal-instrumental sound that defines the genre today, establishing himself as the creative force behind contemporary a cappella's signature aesthetic.

As founder and director of the House Jacks, Sharon created the template for modern a cappella groups and performed with Ray Charles, James Brown, Run DMC, The Temptations, and other music icons across multiple Carnegie Hall appearances. His influence extends far beyond the stage: he founded the Contemporary A Cappella Society and created the infrastructure that sustains the field, including the CARAs, ICCAs, and BOCA compilations. Sharon served as arranger and vocal producer for Universal's Pitch Perfect films and produces The Sing-Off across multiple countries. With over 2,000 published arrangements, he remains contemporary a cappella's most prolific composer, and his 2012 book A Cappella Arranging remains essential reading for the field.

Why we love this

Sharon's arrangement channels the song's irresistible groove into a cappella textures that feel surprisingly instrumental without sacrificing lyrical clarity. Your singers will engage with contemporary arranging techniques that feel accessible yet sophisticated, making this a genuine crowd-pleaser that works equally well in concert or informal settings.

What to expect

The arrangement captures the song's essential friendliness and optimism while translating it into rich vocal harmonies. You'll hear instrumental textures emerge from pure voice, creating a sound that feels both polished and human.

Who it's for

This works for high school and college choirs seeking contemporary a cappella repertoire with genuine substance. Directors looking to program something energetic and familiar without resorting to novelty arrangements will find Sharon's approach rewarding.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the rhythmic pocket early in rehearsal. Lock the groove at half tempo first, then gradually build to performance speed so your singers internalize the pocket rather than rushing.
  • Balance the narrative quality of the lyrics with the driving rhythm section. The text matters here; avoid letting syllabic patter override the song's central question.
  • Create clear dynamic contrast between verses and the hook. The arrangement likely builds energy as the song progresses, so map those shifts explicitly in early rehearsals.
  • Pay special attention to vowel consistency across similar rhythmic figures. When multiple parts move in parallel, unified vowels will strengthen the overall sonority.

How to use it

Place this in the second half of a concert where energy and accessibility serve your pacing. It pairs naturally with other contemporary arrangements and works especially well as a transition into lighter repertoire or as an encore piece.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing rhythmically independent lines while maintaining ensemble cohesion
  • Shaping phrases within a groove-based harmonic structure
  • Sustaining energized vowels during rhythmic patter passages
  • Balancing articulation across mixed rhythmic figures in SATB texture
