About the Arranger: Molly Ijames

Molly Ijames

Molly Ijames grew up in Flint, Michigan, and earned her B.S. in Music Education from Bob Jones University. Her foundation in church music began during her teenage years as a pianist, work that evolved into a multifaceted accompanying ministry spanning churches, community choirs, Christian camps, schools, and congregations across her region.

After seven years at SoundForth Publishing and BJU in Greenville, South Carolina, Ijames established herself as a prolific composer and arranger with over 100 choral anthems, seasonal cantatas, keyboard collections, and instrumental ensemble pieces in print. She regularly leads workshops at music conferences, serves as a church accompanist, and directs corporate worship planning. Based in Davison, Michigan, she continues to accept commissions and teach within her community.

Why we love this

Ijames brings a church musician's sensibility to this beloved standard, shaping it for singers who understand blend and phrasing without demanding vocal gymnastics. The arrangement respects the song's nostalgic character while giving each voice part genuine musicality and moments to breathe.

What to expect

Warmth and simplicity set the emotional tone here. The harmonic language evokes the song's original era while remaining accessible, creating an atmosphere of gathering and remembrance that feels both intimate and celebratory.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for community choirs, church choirs with mixed abilities, and school choirs looking for a crowd-pleasing December concert opener. It suits singers comfortable with part-singing but not looking for technical difficulty.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody line across sopranos and tenors in the opening; this tune belongs front and center, so tune the supporting voices slightly back in the mix.
  • Lean into the lyrical quality of phrases rather than rushing the harmonic rhythm. Ijames's voice leading rewards singers who think in long lines.
  • Keep rhythmic precision in the altos and basses to anchor what is otherwise a warm, singing texture. Their steadiness allows sopranos and tenors to float.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment as a blend reference during sectionals, but encourage singers to listen to each other first.

How to use it

Open your holiday concert with this piece to ground the audience in familiar, beloved material. Its nine pages sit comfortably on a single printed spread or digital page turn, making it practical for sight-reading rehearsals early in the season when time is tight.
