More about this title

About the Artist: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has built a distinguished career at the intersection of choral music and movement, establishing herself as a composer, conductor, and clinician with deep roots in music education. Since 1987, she has been a consistent recipient of the ASCAP Special Music Award, and her catalog includes over 600 choral publications alongside 75 full-length musicals and songbooks. Her conducting has taken her to prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center for honor choir events across the country.

For more than thirty years, Albrecht shaped choral publishing and pedagogy as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications for major educational music publishers, including Alfred Music. She has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. A graduate of Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976) and the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), she has received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both institutions and served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society.

Why we love this

This DVD removes the guesswork from integrating movement into choral performance. Rather than cobbling together ideas from multiple sources, you get polished, tested choreography designed specifically for ten accessible choral titles, all demonstrated clearly by Albrecht and Beck so you can teach staging with confidence in rehearsal.

What to expect

Watching these ten titles come alive with coordinated movement transforms them from stationary choral performances into engaging theatrical moments. The staging feels natural and purposeful rather than forced, enhancing the personality and story of each piece without overwhelming the singers.

Who it's for

Choir directors at all levels seeking straightforward, practical staging ideas that don't require extensive choreographic experience. Whether you work with young singers, mixed ensembles, or community choirs, this resource offers solutions scaled to fit your needs.

How to get the most out of it

  • Break the choreography into small sections during early rehearsals, teaching one phrase of movement alongside its musical phrase so singers internalize the connection between music and motion.
  • Pause the DVD frequently to let your choir practice each staging sequence at performance tempo before moving to the next section.
  • Adjust the suggested choreography to match your ensemble's size and space; the DVD provides a foundation you can modify for your stage or gymnasium.
  • Rehearse movement and singing separately at first, then layer them together only after both are secure.

How to use it

Use these pieces as anchors for concert programs where movement adds energy and visual interest, particularly effective for holiday concerts, spring shows, or any context where you want to showcase your choir's versatility. The variety of titles means you can build a full program using multiple pieces from this DVD, creating a cohesive aesthetic.

Skills your students will build

  • Coordinating physical movement with sustained singing and breath control
  • Responding to visual conducting cues while executing choreography
  • Maintaining ensemble uniformity in stage positioning and timing
  • Building confidence and stage presence through purposeful movement
