About the Arranger: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire and her Master of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, where she specialized in Suzuki pedagogy. She brings classroom experience to her arranging work, teaching elementary and middle school strings in the Appleton Area School District while also directing cello studies through the Lawrence University Arts Academy.

Why we love this

Gruselle nails the balance between accessibility and personality here. A Grade 1.5 string arrangement that actually swings, with optional percussion parts that let you build exactly the sound your ensemble can handle without overcomplicating the strings. Holiday pops programs need this kind of genuine fun.

What to expect

Warm nostalgia wrapped in a crisp, bright rhythm. The traditional carol melody feels both familiar and freshly awake, lifted by the gentle cha-cha pulse underneath. It's cheerful without being silly, festive without exhaustion.

Who it's for

Beginning string orchestras that want a holiday piece with real personality and minimal rehearsal demands. This sits perfectly for groups working on Grade 1 and 1.5 repertoire who are ready to explore rhythmic independence between sections.

How to get the most out of it

  • Feel the cha-cha pulse in the accompaniment rather than overplaying it; the rhythm section (whether percussion or pizzicato strings) carries the style, so let your melody players sit on top of that groove.
  • If you're adding the optional percussion, rehearse them separately first so they lock the pattern before integrating with the full ensemble.
  • Shape the traditional carol melody with a warm, singing tone even as the rhythm section drives the Latin vibe; the contrast is what makes the arrangement work.

How to use it

Save this for the lighter half of a holiday concert, where it lands perfectly between your serious carols and any full-ensemble showpieces. The optional percussion also makes it flexible if you're building a program around the players you have available that particular week.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining steady rhythmic pulse while playing melody
  • Responding to Latin rhythm patterns in a non-classical style
  • Balancing independence between melody and accompaniment sections
  • Reading and executing optional percussion parts
