About the Author: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin is an ASCAP award-winning composer and arranger whose work spans choral music, film scoring, and educational publishing. He has conducted performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Ryman Auditorium, Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, and Harpa Concert Hall, establishing himself as a leader in the American choral community. As Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press, Gilpin shapes choral repertoire for schools and community ensembles nationwide.

Beyond music, Gilpin has built a parallel career as a certified financial coach and professional organizer, founding Maestro Organizing and appearing on Fox, NBC, and the television series "Hoarders." In 2021, he composed the score for the award-winning short film "Rosie's Rescue" (Best Score winner) and premiered a new arrangement of "What Child is This?" with opera singer Angela Brown and the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. He holds membership in ACDA, NAfME, SAG-AFTRA, and is a Life Loyal Member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Why we love this

Gilpin's choreography for these two beloved holiday songs strips away complexity without sacrificing fun. Kids engage immediately because the moves match the song's energy and humor, and the accompanying CD with separate tracks means you can rehearse movement and music independently or together.

What to expect

Playful irreverence meets holiday sparkle. "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" gives dancers permission to be silly and mischievous, while "Jingle-Bell Rock" channels pure joy and movement. Both songs invite uninhibited fun without requiring dance training.

Who it's for

Elementary students ages 6 and up in gym classes, dance classes, school assemblies, holiday programs, camps, and after-school settings. This set works for mixed-ability groups because the choreography is straightforward and the songs themselves are instantly recognizable.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the accompaniment track alone so students can focus entirely on learning the choreography without singing. Once movement patterns are solid, layer in the vocal melody.
  • Break the routine into 8-count or 16-count sections rather than teaching the full piece at once. Small chunks build confidence, especially for younger dancers.
  • Use the performance track during final rehearsals and in performance to maintain energy and timing that might flag with live singing alone.
  • Have students watch themselves in mirrors or record rehearsals so they can see the visual impact of their movements and self-correct alignment and spacing.

How to use it

Program this set at winter assemblies, holiday concerts, or year-end celebrations where the goal is audience delight and student engagement over technical precision. It pairs well with more traditional choral repertoire as an intermission lift or closing number that gets the whole gym moving. The two contrasting songs give you flexibility to feature different student groups or to bookend a longer program.

Skills your students will build

  • Learning choreography to recorded accompaniment
  • Coordinating movement with vocal rhythm and phrasing
  • Following stage directions and spatial awareness in formation
  • Building confidence in movement and performance comfort
  • Responding to tempo and dynamics in recorded tracks
