About the Composer: Russell Robinson

Russell Robinson

Dr. Russell L. Robinson is an Emeritus Professor of Music Education at the University of Florida whose influence on choral pedagogy spans five decades and six continents. He has conducted at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the White House, while also serving as a consultant, clinician, and presenter at state, regional, national, and international music education conferences. His work earned him induction into the Florida Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in 2016, and he has held leadership roles including President of FMEA and National Collegiate Chair for the National Association for Music Education.

Beyond the podium, Robinson is a prolific composer and arranger with over 500 publications in print, ranging from choral compositions and instrumental arrangements to articles, instructional materials, and educational videos. His reputation rests on the fusion of rigorous pedagogy with practical musicianship—he understands what singers need, how to sequence learning, and how to build ensemble skills systematically.

Why we love this

A warm-up collection designed by someone who has spent decades training singers at the highest levels brings credibility and real classroom wisdom to every exercise. Robinson sequences these twelve warm-ups intentionally, so you're not assembling a random mix of vocalises but following a progression that prepares voices and ears for the work ahead.

What to expect

These exercises balance purposeful technique work with musicality; they're never dull drills. The two-part writing creates harmonic interest and ear training while singers attend to breath, tone, and blend.

Who it's for

Directors of concert choirs, community choirs, and church choirs who want a systematically designed, reliable warm-up resource grounded in proven vocal pedagogy. This works equally well for experienced ensembles and developing programs that need structured vocal foundation work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a consistent warm-up routine by using the same sequence daily; repetition builds vocal muscle memory and allows singers to focus deeper on tone quality and intonation as exercises become familiar.
  • Begin each rehearsal with the full sequence to center the choir's sound, then return to individual exercises throughout the rehearsal to address specific technical needs as repertoire demands.
  • Encourage singers to match the shape and character of each warm-up to the style of music you're preparing that day; a legit, resonant warm-up readies voices differently than a rhythmic, articulated one.

How to use it

Open every rehearsal with the sequence, or select specific warm-ups that target the technical demands of your concert repertoire. The compact format makes it simple to keep a copy in your score binder for reference during sectionals and coaching sessions.

Skills your students will build

  • breath control and support
  • intonation and ear training through two-part harmony
  • resonant tone production across registers
  • blend and ensemble listening
