About the Composer: Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest has spent over thirty years in the middle school classroom, where he developed the pedagogical approach that defines his published works. His compositions and methods have become fixtures in band programs across the country, performed at venues ranging from school concerts to Chicago's Millennium Park in front of thousands. He received the Illinois Grade School Music Association's highest honor in 2017 and holds degrees from Illinois State University and Northwestern University.

Beyond the classroom, Loest's music has appeared on network television including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Good Morning America. He founded Fanfare Music Press in 2022 to publish compositions and arrangements built on the same principles that guide his teaching: accessibility without compromise, clarity of purpose, and genuine musicality. He is an ASCAP member and has written for major publishers including FJH Music Company and C.L. Barnhouse Company.

Why we love this

After nearly two decades of daily work with developing musicians, Loest designed this book to solve the real problem every director faces: how to use those first ten minutes of rehearsal to address genuine technique gaps without boring your ensemble. The progression is genuinely logical, moving from fundamental articulation and flexibility work through scales and chorales in a way that feels purposeful rather than arbitrary. What sets it apart is Loest's eye for what actually matters at each level; every exercise earns its place because he watched thousands of students struggle with these exact issues.

What to expect

Opening this book feels like having a master teacher in the room who understands what young musicians actually struggle with. The exercises have weight to them; they're not busywork, and students sense the difference. You move through material that builds genuinely toward better tone, cleaner articulation, and real flexibility without the sense of repeating the same drills endlessly.

Who it's for

This method works for any ensemble between elementary through smaller high school programs that need structured, teacher-friendly warm-up material. It's especially useful if you're building a band program from scratch or stepping into a group where fundamentals need attention. The clear progression means you can pull exercises appropriate to your specific ensemble's level rather than trying to retrofit a one-size-fits-all approach.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the articulation studies early in the year to establish consistent tonguing across your section. Return to them periodically as a reset when you notice slurred attacks creeping in.
  • Treat the flexibility exercises as technique builders, not warm-ups to rush through. One or two of these at tempo will do more for range and control than playing through a stack of chorales.
  • Anchor your daily routine with one chorale you stay with for a full week rather than rotating through different ones. This repetition builds intonation memory and allows you to refine balance across the band.
  • Reference the glossary when a student asks about a musical term you're using in rehearsal. The book becomes more valuable when students realize they can find answers independently.

How to use it

Use this as your daily warm-up spine rather than a supplementary resource you dip into occasionally. Pick a section at the beginning of the year and work through it systematically, then rotate back through in subsequent years as students advance. The articulation and flexibility studies fit perfectly in the first month of school when you're establishing fundamentals; by winter, you'll be deeper into the scale and chorale material that keeps your section sharp.

Skills your students will build

  • Clear articulation across the ensemble (single tonguing, accents, staccato)
  • Flexibility and range expansion through systematic breath and embouchure work
  • Scale facility and intonation across all major and minor keys
  • Chorale balance and blend, including dynamic control
  • Musical vocabulary through the glossary of terms
  • Independence in understanding musical directions and notation
