About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober brings two decades of teaching experience to her compositions, having worked in public school settings, university instruction, and private studio teaching. Her training spans music education, piano performance, and jazz studies, with degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Minnesota State University, Moorhead. She studied with renowned pedagogues including Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich on piano, Mary Hoffman in music education, and Tony Caramia in jazz.

Beyond the studio, Bober serves as an active church pianist and accompanist, and has directed church music programs. She is a sought-after clinician and presenter at piano teacher conventions and workshops throughout North America, known for her ability to write music that connects students to genuine musicality while respecting their developmental level.

Why we love this

Bober crafts waltz writing at this level that genuinely sounds mature, not oversimplified. The included duet part transforms what could be a solo exercise into a collaborative experience, adding harmonic richness and emotional depth that students feel immediately when performing with a teacher or peer.

What to expect

A gentle, lyrical waltz with an unhurried grace that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The duet arrangement creates a conversational warmth, like two dancers moving in perfect sync across a softly lit floor.

Who it's for

Late elementary pianists ready to step beyond drill-based repertoire and explore interpretive playing. This piece welcomes students who respond well to romantic language and benefit from the motivation that comes with playing something that sounds genuinely musical.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line with a singing tone throughout, treating the waltz rhythm as a supporting framework rather than the focal point.
  • Balance the accompaniment texture so the flowing patterns remain transparent and don't overwhelm the duet partner's melody.
  • Explore the contrast between sections by adjusting your dynamic and tempo stability; slight flexibility here adds character without losing the waltz's gentle pulse.
  • Listen carefully to your duet partner and match their phrasing, even if written as two separate parts—the whole piece breathes together.

How to use it

Feature this in a student recital where you want to showcase interpretive growth and mature musicianship at an accessible level. The duet option also works beautifully as a teacher-student performance piece, giving audiences insight into the collaborative joy of piano study.
