Trained at Mars Hill College, Oklahoma Baptist University (BME), and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MCM in theory and composition), he has published over 1,300 works across multiple American publishers. His career spans church music leadership, university teaching positions at three institutions, and directorship of the Church Music Department of the Florida Baptist Convention until 2001. His contributions to sacred music have earned him recognition including the Hines Sims Award from the Baptist Church Music Conference.
Now based in Greenville, South Carolina, Burroughs remains active in the choral community through clinics, workshops, and composer residencies. His deep understanding of what works in the church and school choir setting informs every piece he writes.
