More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged over 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals now in widespread use. His pedagogical resources, including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique, have shaped how music educators approach vocal training and music literacy.

Beyond the page, Beck maintains an active presence as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator across the United States and internationally. He holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, sings tenor with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir, and continues performing and directing musical theatre. His dual commitment to composition and classroom practice informs every publication he creates.

Why we love this

Beck's organizational structure here is exceptionally practical. Eleven clearly labeled categories mean you spend zero time hunting for the right warm-up; the pedagogical purpose of each exercise is stated upfront, so singers understand what they're building. The included recorded accompaniments with progressive modulations save rehearsal time while the reproducible vocal line pages mean every singer can have their own extract without reprinting the entire book.

What to expect

Structured without feeling rigid. Each warm-up feels purposeful because its aim is clearly stated, and the progression from basic posture work through complex harmony exercises gives singers a sense of building mastery rather than mindless repetition. The lightly orchestrated piano accompaniments provide musical context that makes technique practice feel connected to real singing.

Who it's for

Choir directors seeking a comprehensive, organized warm-up resource for rehearsals of any size, voice teachers who work with both solo singers and ensemble members, and choral programs where singers need reinforcement in fundamental vocal concepts. The book works equally well for middle school through adult choirs and mixed-voice ensembles.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the recorded accompaniment during full rehearsals so singers can focus on technique without the added cognitive load of reading piano parts.
  • Use the lay-flat binding to display exercises on a music stand during sectional rehearsals; the comb binding stays open without pencil holders or weighted clips.
  • Build a rotation: commit to one category per week so singers develop systematic understanding rather than jumping randomly through exercises.
  • Encourage singers to download the reproducible vocal line PDFs for their personal practice folders; isolated vocal lines remove the accompaniment safety net and reveal balance issues quickly.

How to use it

Integrate one category per rehearsal cycle to build foundational skills systematically alongside repertoire learning. For a fall concert preparation, begin with posture, breath support, and vowel exercises during August rehearsals, then layer in blend, diction, and diphthong work as you move into sectional and full ensemble singing. The recorded accompaniments make this resource equally valuable for studio lessons and home practice between rehearsals.

Skills your students will build

  • Posture and breath support awareness
  • Pure vowel production and vowel modification across the staff
  • Clarity in diction and articulation within phrases
  • Recognition and singing of diphthongs accurately
  • Blend and balance in ensemble texture
  • Interval singing accuracy and harmonic awareness
  • Dynamic control and expressive shaping
  • Sight-reading through progressive warm-up organization
