About the Arranger: Lon Beery

Lon Beery

Lon Beery directs six choruses at Spry Middle School in Webster, New York, serving approximately 500 students across multiple voice levels. His arranging and compositional work spans more than 50 published pieces, with selections appearing across Alfred Music, BriLee, and other major choral publishers.

Beery's compositions have reached national prominence, including a TTBB setting performed by the U.S. Army Chorus during President Ronald Reagan's internment service in California. He has received multiple ASCAP Standard Awards for his work and contributes regularly to the choral education community through articles in the Choral Journal and Music Educators Journal. Currently serving as Middle School Chair for New York ACDA, Beery has also presented sessions at state, regional, and national conferences through ACDA and MENC.

Why we love this

Beery's arrangement brings genuine warmth to this folk standard while honoring its simplicity. The flexible voicing options (TB/TTB/TBB/TTBB) mean you can perform this with nearly any configuration your program has on any given day, making it genuinely practical for contest prep and concerts alike. The PianoTrax accompaniment keeps rehearsals moving and performances polished without requiring a live accompanist.

What to expect

Joyful and straightforward, with the kind of musical directness that makes audiences smile. The arrangement celebrates the song's heritage without overthinking it, creating a warm, conversational sound that draws listeners in.

Who it's for

Middle school through adult choirs looking for accessible, flexible repertoire that programs well in contests and festivals. This works equally well for developing singers and experienced ensembles seeking a crowd-pleasing traditional piece that won't demand weeks of rehearsal time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the parts so the melody emerges naturally rather than dominating. In mixed voicings, support the line carries the tune even when it shifts between sections.
  • Let the folk quality breathe. Resist over-legit singing; this arrangement works best with clarity and forward motion rather than lush sustain.
  • Use the digital accompaniment to establish the tempo and harmonic foundation in early rehearsals, then work toward singing the piece with independence from the track.

How to use it

Program this in a concert celebrating folk traditions or as a contrast to more complex contemporary choral work. Its brevity and appeal also make it valuable for festival competitions where you need strong, engaging literature that resonates with adjudicators and audiences.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in multiple flexible voicings (reading TB, TTB, TBB, and TTBB arrangements interchangeably)
  • Harmonic independence and part security in folk-based arrangements
  • Blending and balance in ensemble singing
  • Performing with digital accompaniment tracks
