Description
In Via Claudia, the orchestra takes the listeners on a journey across the Alps, which begins on a misty morning near Venice. In a stately procession the travelers master an arduous climb and navigate bumpy trails and steep mountain passes. When the highest point is reached, the sun breaks through wispy clouds and they behold the breathtaking alpine scenery of the valley. The tour continues to a flowering alpine meadow with peacefully grazing cows. An alphorn sounds from afar - the echoes bounce between the steep mountain walls. The approach to Landeck is illustrated by brilliant brass fanfares. Finally, the end of the journey, the arrival in Augsburg, is marked by a triumphant hymn.

More about this title

About the Composer: Johan de Meij

Johan de Meij is a Dutch composer and conductor whose works for wind band have become staples in music education and concert programming. His compositions blend accessible musical language with sophisticated orchestration, making them equally effective for developing ensembles and professional groups.

Why we love this

De Meij's narrative approach transforms a Grade 4 piece into something cinematic and engaging without sacrificing musical substance. The programmatic journey gives your band a clear emotional arc to pursue, and the orchestration rewards both strong section leaders and developing players with meaningful material.

What to expect

You travel through distinct landscapes with your ensemble: hushed, misty forests give way to the exertion of climbing, then suddenly open onto brilliant alpine vistas. The emotional arc spans quiet contemplation, physical struggle, and ultimately triumph, with the alphorn echoes providing a moment of serene beauty in the midst of the journey.

Who it's for

Directors programming a concert that benefits from accessible yet musically substantive repertoire will find Via Claudia gives students a work they can perform with real musicality. The Grade 4 level makes it attainable for many bands while the programmatic content keeps audiences engaged.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening mist section with subtle dynamics and light articulation in the woodwinds; let the sense of morning emerge gradually rather than stating it all at once.
  • Prepare your brass for the fanfares by isolating those sections in rehearsal to lock the rhythmic precision and allow them to cut through cleanly.
  • Balance the alphorn solo (whether performed by a French horn or euphonium soloist) against the accompaniment; the echo effect depends on clear spatial separation between the melody and supporting voices.
  • Build the final triumphant hymn by bringing all sections into unified tuning and phrasing during the last rehearsals; this moment deserves the full weight of your ensemble's sound.

How to use it

Program Via Claudia as a centerpiece in a concert built around travel or nature themes, pairing it with contrasting shorter works. The journey narrative also makes it effective as a concert opener that sets a clear tone and draws listeners in immediately.

Skills your students will build

  • Responding to programmatic imagery through dynamic and tonal shaping
  • Sectional balance and blend across multiple key orchestration textures
  • Sustained phrasing in slower sections and articulate precision in rhythmically active passages
  • Collective interpretation of narrative structure and emotional pacing
