About the Arranger: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan holds degrees in music education from Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma. During her 28 years teaching choral music in Norman Public Schools, she directed multiple choirs to consistent superior ratings and earned the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association's Director of Distinction Award in 2004.

With over 425 published choral octavos and two million copies in circulation, Drennan has become a prolific voice in American choral writing. She has clinicaled across 19 states and Canada, adjudicated regional contests, and directed church composer weekends nationwide. Her compositions have reached audiences from Carnegie Hall to concert halls across North America, and she continues to compose, arrange, and lead music reading sessions for publishers while performing with her daughter in various symphonic settings.

Why we love this

Drennan's setting captures the longing in this beloved Advent hymn while keeping the arrangement singable for singers at various levels. The SATB voicing sits comfortably without unnecessary complexity, letting the text and melody remain the focal points where they belong.

What to expect

Reverent and luminous, with the earnest quality of a people waiting and watching. The harmonic language supports reflection without becoming heavy or overly chromatic, allowing singers and listeners to inhabit the spiritual anticipation the text describes.

Who it's for

This arrangement suits choirs of mixed ability levels preparing for Advent services. It works equally well in church choir settings and school choral programs looking for sacred repertoire with immediate musical impact.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the phrase endings with a slight lift rather than a full cutoff; this keeps the meditative quality intact across the full length of the piece
  • Balance the harmonies so the soprano melody emerges clearly without forcing the other voices under. Blend is essential in hymn arrangements
  • Consider the historical weight of this text when setting the tempo. A processional pace works better than rushing through the verse

How to use it

Place this in an Advent service where it anchors a hymn-based segment or opens a longer choral work. The seven pages allow for a substantial musical statement without overwhelming the liturgical flow of a worship setting.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained hymn textures with appropriate breath control
  • Balancing harmonic blend in four-part writing
  • Text expression in sacred Latin-influenced English
  • Ensemble intonation across multiple phrases
