About the Arranger: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw's influence extends across North America and Europe, having led workshops in 45 states and internationally in Canada, Australia, the Bahamas, Sweden, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Germany. He holds degrees in Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University and earned his DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. Shaw's teaching combines rigorous musicality with infectious energy and humor, shaped by early work in California public schools and later as founder of the acclaimed COS Vocal Jazz Ensemble at College of the Siskiyous.

As a prolific composer and arranger with over 2,500 works in print and nearly 20 million copies sold worldwide, Shaw brings deep pedagogical insight to every arrangement. His credentials include vocal instruction with Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Chris Calloway, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks. Currently directing the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University and performing with the a cappella group Just 4 Kicks, Shaw has received multiple ASCAP awards and recently completed a commission for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. His creative range extends to musical theater, co-written with his wife Markita.

Why we love this

Shaw captures the spiritual warmth and accessibility of this beloved hymn without sacrificing musical substance. The SAB voicing opens this standard to mixed ensembles of moderate ability, while his arrangement maintains the emotional core that makes the song resonate across generations. You'll find the balance between simplicity and craft that makes singers feel capable and audiences genuinely moved.

What to expect

Warm and grounded, like a moment of collective reflection. The melody carries a gentle, lifting quality that suggests hope without sentimentality, while the three-part writing creates space for each voice to be heard. This is music that feels both intimate and communal, inviting singers and listeners into something larger than themselves.

Who it's for

Mixed choirs seeking accessible sacred repertoire with genuine spiritual substance. This arrangement works for high school, community, and early undergraduate ensembles that want to expand their SAB library with material that engages audiences and feels rewarding to perform.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the sopranos and altos find their natural blend before adding the baritone line; this melody-centric approach prevents the bass from undercutting the tune's inherent lift.
  • Shape the dynamic arc carefully across phrases rather than staying static; the text's message gains power through thoughtful phrasing that mirrors the text's natural speech rhythm.
  • Encourage singers to internalize the spiritual quality without relying on vibrato as a shortcut; a centered, connected tone serves the reverent character better than an overly decorative sound.
  • Consider brief moments of rubato in key cadential passages to breathe the music forward, especially if performing with accompaniment that allows flexibility.

How to use it

Program this as a concert centerpiece or as part of a sacred/inspirational set that reflects your ensemble's values. It pairs naturally with other spirituals and hymn arrangements, and works equally well in festival settings or community concert contexts where accessibility and emotional authenticity matter. The modest length makes it a strong closing selection that leaves audiences with something memorable.
