About the Composer: Michael Kamuf

Michael Kamuf

Michael Kamuf earned Bachelor of Music degrees in Jazz Performance and Music Education from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University and a Master of Arts in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University. His compositions and arrangements have been recorded by prestigious ensembles including the Woody Herman and Glenn Miller Orchestras, the USAF Airmen of Note, and the US Navy Commodores, and performed by soloists such as James Moody, Eddie Daniels, and Sean Jones. As an exclusive Belwin composer, Kamuf has over 100 publications across jazz, orchestra, and concert band catalogs.

Kamuf taught instrumental music in Ohio public schools beginning in 1991 and spent three decades with Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools, twenty-seven of those years as Director of Bands and Orchestras at John T. Baker Middle School in Damascus, Maryland. His concert band and orchestra ensembles earned consistent high ratings at festivals and commissioned works for young musicians. He leads the Mike Kamuf Little Big Band, a jazz octet based in the Baltimore and Washington, DC region, and has received the Montgomery County Superintendent's Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award for his contributions to music education.

Why we love this

Kamuf delivers exactly what a Grade 1 band needs: clean, energetic writing with a genuine musical hook that students connect to immediately. Using the D Phrygian mode as the compositional anchor gives you a natural teaching moment without feeling forced, and the driving rhythms keep the ensemble engaged from downbeat to final chord. This is repertoire that works hard in the rehearsal room and sounds polished in performance.

What to expect

Unleashed opens with an immediate sense of purpose and forward momentum. The Phrygian mode gives it an exotic, slightly edgy character that stands apart from typical Grade 1 fare, while the rhythmic drive suggests confidence and energy without demanding virtuosity.

Who it's for

Beginning concert bands eager for material with genuine musical substance and a hook that holds student interest. This score works equally well for middle school ensembles building fundamental skills and for high school or community bands seeking contest repertoire that feels contemporary without overshooting their technical range.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize the D Phrygian mode when introducing the opening melodic idea; have students identify those five signature pitches by ear before tackling them on their instruments.
  • Lock the foundation by establishing a steady pulse in the rhythm section early in rehearsal; the driving rhythms depend on rock-solid timekeeping from percussion and low brass.
  • Shape the bold melodies with deliberate phrasing and dynamic contrast; avoid letting the piece flatten into one tempo or volume, even at this grade level.
  • Use the PerformancePlus+ recording as a reference for tempo and articulation style, then work toward a performance that reflects your band's personality and character.

How to use it

Program this as a contest or festival selection where its Grade 1 technical accessibility pairs with musical maturity that impresses adjudicators and audiences alike. It also works beautifully as an opener or closer on a concert program when you want to capture attention right away.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognition and performance of the D Phrygian mode
  • Sustained rhythmic accuracy in driving sections with syncopation
  • Melodic phrasing and dynamic shaping at the beginner level
  • Ensemble blend and balance in supporting voices
