Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Butler University. He spent three decades as a high school music director and administrator before committing himself full-time to composition and arranging in the 1990s.

Since 1973, Wagner has published more than 3,500 works across every major ensemble type: choirs, concert bands, orchestras, handbells, organ, piano, and vocal music. His output has reached audiences globally through concert halls, broadcasts, and educational institutions; over seventeen million copies of his music are in circulation worldwide. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.
