About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has built a catalog of over 450 choral works, arrangements, and musical theater pieces that reach singers across the globe. His educational resources, including Sing at First Sight and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique, reflect his deep commitment to choral literacy and technique. Beck holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, and he regularly serves as guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for honor choirs and all-state ensembles throughout the United States and beyond.
Beyond his work at Alfred, Beck is an accomplished tenor who performs with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and has lent his voice to Alfred studio recordings since 1992. He brings equal passion to musical theater and to training the next generation of singers, making him a trusted voice in contemporary choral composition and music education.
Why we love this
Beck's ability to create music that feels both intimate and universally moving comes through in every phrase here. The instrumentation choices are inspired: the piano becomes texture and atmosphere rather than mere accompaniment, while the optional cello adds a luminous layer that singers and audiences will recognize as a compositional signature. This piece respects the artistry of SSA singers without condescension.
What to expect
Crystalline and introspective. The music settles like fresh snow on quiet branches, neither rushing nor lingering too long. There is profound beauty in restraint here, a sense of stillness that invites singers and listeners to pause and breathe together.
Who it's for
Directors seeking a meaningful addition to winter concerts or end-of-year programs will find an accessible yet artistically rich piece in SSA voicing. This work suits intermediate to advanced choirs who can sustain the lyrical, expressive demands without oversinging.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the choir's expressiveness with the delicate piano accompaniment by rehearsing sections with the recorded version to internalize the rubato and dynamic contours.
- If including cello, draw out the sustained melodic lines in the string part during ensemble rehearsals; let singers hear how their phrases mirror and complement the instrument's lustrous quality.
- Shape phrases through dynamic subtlety rather than sudden contrasts. This music asks for a contemplative approach where each breath feels intentional.
How to use it
Program this during a candlelit winter concert or as a reflective centerpiece in a longer set of seasonal works. It pairs beautifully with both traditional holiday fare and contemporary secular pieces, offering an elegant alternative that doesn't require holiday subject matter.
Skills your students will build
- Singing sustained lyrical lines with consistent breath support
- Interpreting dynamic and expressive markings on a score level
- Blending voices in close harmonic structures
- Responding to and matching the articulation and phrasing of accompaniment
- Ensemble balance when performing with optional cello doubling
