About the Arranger: Richard L. Saucedo

Richard L. Saucedo

Richard L. Saucedo shaped the Indiana band landscape during his 31 years at Carmel High School, where he served as Director of Bands and Chairman of Performing Arts. His ensembles earned consistent recognition at state, regional, and national levels, with Carmel's Wind Symphony I reaching the Music for All National Concert Band Festival multiple times and claiming the Indiana State Championship in 2013. The Carmel Marching Greyhounds dominated the Bands of America Grand National Championship circuit for 17 consecutive years, securing national titles in 2005 and 2012.

Beyond his classroom legacy, Saucedo has built a significant presence in the arranging and composing world, writing across marching bands, concert bands, choral ensembles, and orchestras. His work with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps and previous role as Brass Arranger for the Cavaliers contributed to five DCI world championships. Saucedo earned Indiana's Bandmaster of the Year award (1998-99), was inducted into the Music for All Hall of Fame (2015) and the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame (2022), and holds membership in the American Bandmasters Association. He currently serves as Senior Educational Consultant for Music for All and Bands of America.

Why we love this

Saucedo brings a championship-level sensibility to holiday programming without pretension or overwrought scoring. This arrangement harnesses the carol's melodic strength while adding contemporary textures that keep high school wind players engaged rather than bored by yet another pastiche arrangement. The Grade 3 scoring balances accessibility with genuine musical substance, making it rewarding for both developing ensembles and established programs looking to refresh their holiday rotation.

What to expect

Sparkle without sentiment. The traditional carol melody grounds the piece, but Saucedo's contemporary harmonic language and rhythmic vitality push it forward with modern sophistication. You hear the familiar tune instantly, yet the fresh orchestration keeps ears engaged throughout.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 3 level seeking holiday material that avoids clicheacute orchestrations and instead offers genuine musical substance. Directors programming winter concerts need repertoire that challenges students without requiring extraordinary technical facility, and this arrangement delivers exactly that balance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the pulse early in sectionals. The driving energy Saucedo writes depends on rhythmic precision from the bottom up, so lock the foundation before layering in countermelodies and harmonic support.
  • Feature your solo voices strategically. If the score designates melody passages for specific sections, allow those players ownership of their lines in rehearsal; this transforms the arrangement from orchestrated background music into a true ensemble showcase.
  • Attend to dynamics with intention. Contemporary settings often live or die by contrast, so resist playing everything at a moderate volume. Push the forte passages and let the softer moments breathe.

How to use it

Open your holiday concert's second half with this piece to reset audience energy after the first block of slower, more reflective arrangements. It pairs well alongside other Grade 3 holiday works or serves as the centerpiece of a contemporary-styled concert season that questions what modern band music can sound like.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing contemporary harmonic language in a tonal context
  • Balancing countermelodies and harmonic texture without overshadowing the main theme
  • Sustaining energy and precision across a full arrangement without fatigue
  • Responding to dynamic contrast as an expressive tool
