About the Arranger: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and completed her Master of Music Education at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point with a focus on Suzuki pedagogy. She has taught elementary and middle school strings in the Appleton Area School District while also serving as cello instructor at the Lawrence University Arts Academy in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Why we love this

Gruselle's arrangement respects the melodic character of these Newfoundland folk tunes while writing idiomatically for young string players. The contrasting movements work beautifully as a complete concert piece without demanding virtuosity, and the orchestration gives every section room to shine.

What to expect

The first movement opens with the tender, folk-song character of 'She's Like the Swallow,' inviting players into an introspective and song-like approach to their instruments. The energy shifts completely into the second movement as 'Killigrews Soiree' brings infectious rhythmic motion and a celebratory spirit that feels almost like a country dance.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 3 level looking for substantial yet accessible repertoire that develops musicality without excessive technical demands. Directors seeking pieces that showcase both lyrical and rhythmic capabilities in a single program work will find this pairing particularly effective.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the legato lines in 'She's Like the Swallow' by thinking horizontally across phrases rather than stopping at barlines; this draws out the lyrical quality of the melody.
  • Articulate the rhythmic character of 'Killigrews Soiree' with crisp, bouncy bow strokes that capture the dance energy without sacrificing ensemble blend.
  • Balance the arrangement so that primary melodic material stands clearly but secondary voices remain audible; young orchestras often play everything at the same dynamic level.

How to use it

Program this as a complete work to demonstrate range within a single piece, or use each movement as a standalone concert selection depending on your programming needs. The contrasting moods make it ideal for concerts that balance different emotional territories, and the cultural content opens doors for thematic programming around folk traditions or regional music.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining long, even legato lines with consistent tone quality
  • Executing clean rhythmic articulation in dance-style idioms
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment within the ensemble
  • Reading and executing dynamic shaping across full phrases
  • Responding to contrasting character and tempo within a single work
