• Balance the parts carefully. The melody in the second part should cut through the roll without either part fighting for dominance. Adjust sticking and dynamics during rehearsal to find the sweet spot.
• Lock in the tempo together before performing. Have both drummers count off or use a conductor's gesture so the roll stays even and the melody lands cleanly on the beat.
• Work the transition moments slowly. Where the melody enters or exits, both parts need to be rhythmically confident so the ensemble relationship stays clear.
