Gayle Kowalchyk

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk has shaped piano pedagogy across four decades as a university instructor, clinician, and prolific composer of educational repertoire. She earned her piano performance degrees from Ohio University and Northwestern University, then completed her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her teaching career has spanned multiple institutions, including Eastern Illinois University (where she directed the piano preparatory program and coordinated class piano instruction), Oklahoma Baptist University, the University of Oklahoma, and the National Music Camp at Interlochen during the summers of 1979 through 1982.

Kowalchyk's most significant contribution to music education comes through her collaborative work with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster. Together they have authored more than 300 educational piano books, among them the widely adopted Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts series. Currently on the faculty at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy, Kowalchyk continues to work as a clinician and adjudicator for national conferences and music education organizations.
