About the Composer: Katie O'Connor-Ballantyne

Katie O'Connor-Ballantyne

Katie O'Connor-Ballantyne brings decades of teaching experience across every musical level to her work as a composer and educator. She has shaped musicians from elementary students through graduate programs, serving as an adjunct professor at Ithaca College's School of Music and as Artistic Director of the Ithaca Children and Youth Chorus, while maintaining an active presence as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician at festivals and conferences nationwide.

Her published works appear with Alfred Music and Heritage Music Press, and she is the author of two influential music education texts: Harmony Handbook and Finding Your Teacher Voice. O'Connor-Ballantyne holds a BM in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Ithaca College and an MA in Chant and Ritual Song from the Irish World Academy of Music & Dance at the University of Limerick, grounding her compositional voice in both rigorous pedagogy and world music traditions.

Why we love this

O'Connor-Ballantyne's collection reflects a composer who understands what solo singers actually need: repertoire that sits comfortably in the medium-high range without sacrificing musical substance or emotional depth. Her background teaching singers across age groups and skill levels means every piece works not just technically, but artistically, making these songs equally rewarding in recital settings or as performance vehicles for developing artists.

What to expect

These songs carry the warmth of a composer who respects the solo voice and the accompaniment equally, creating pieces that feel conversational and intimate rather than overly theatrical. The medium-high range sits naturally for many singers, allowing focus to land on musicality and storytelling rather than technical struggle.

Who it's for

This collection serves solo singers exploring repertoire in the medium-high range, whether preparing for recitals, auditions, or performance classes. It works equally well for high school vocalists building their solo performance experience and adult amateur singers seeking accessible yet musically satisfying secular songs.

How to get the most out of it

  • Familiarize yourself with the accompaniment by listening to the digital audio download multiple times before rehearsal; this allows you to hear the harmonic landscape and find your entry points with confidence.
  • Mark phrasing and breath points early in your preparation, keeping in mind that the medium-high range benefits from thoughtful breath placement that doesn't interrupt musical lines.
  • Pay attention to the accompaniment's rhythmic character; locking into its groove early prevents the common pitfall of rushing or dragging against the recorded track.

How to use it

Include individual selections in student recitals or performance class showcases where you want vocalists to shine without the demands of a full choral arrangement. Solo pieces from this collection also pair well with larger ensemble work on a concert, offering variety in texture and allowing featured singers moments in the spotlight.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining phrases with musical intention in the medium-high tessitura
  • Maintaining rhythmic accuracy with pre-recorded accompaniment
  • Interpreting secular song with attention to text and accompaniment design
  • Building confidence in solo recital performance and audience connection
