Why we love this
Bullock crafts a piece that respects the young band's capabilities while delivering genuine musical substance. The contrasting sections give every part of your ensemble meaningful material to play, and the regal character inspires both performers and listeners without requiring advanced technique.
What to expect
Trafalgar Square unfolds with regal pageantry and expansive energy, evoking the grandeur of London's iconic landmark. The piece shifts between noble, stately passages and contrasting moments that showcase different characters within the band, creating a work that feels both festive and purposeful.
Who it's for
Grade 2 bands ready to program a concert piece that demonstrates maturity without excessive technical demands. This score works well for directors developing ensemble balance and musicality in younger musicians.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the noble, stately character in the opening sections by keeping articulation clean and controlled; avoid rushing the lyrical passages.
- Allow the contrasting styles to breathe as distinct musical ideas; transition between them with purposeful phrasing rather than abrupt shifts.
- Give each section time to rehearse its flourishes separately before combining parts; this builds confidence and clarity in the ensemble sound.
How to use it
Position this as a centerpiece concert number that showcases your band's maturity and versatility. It works particularly well in spring concerts or contest programs where you want a substantial Grade 2 selection that demonstrates thoughtful musicianship alongside accessible technique.
