More about this title

About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray brings twenty years of choral direction experience to her work as Director of Choirs at Rosemead High School in California. She holds degrees in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, credentials that ground her compositional voice in both classical training and contemporary choral writing.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray has established herself as a prolific voice in music education. Beyond the classroom and rehearsal hall, she remains an active performer and continues to expand her musical practice alongside her personal interests in travel, swimming, reading, and cycling.

Why we love this

Gray's Christmas arrangement lands in that sweet spot between accessibility and musical substance. The recorded accompaniment gives your singers a polished, professional standard to match during rehearsals, which means you spend less time training ears and more time building interpretation.

What to expect

A seasonal celebration grounded in familiar Christmas warmth. Gray's arrangement respects the tradition while bringing clarity and shape to every voice part, creating a performance that feels both comfortable and intentional.

Who it's for

This piece works well for high school choirs, community choruses, and church ensembles looking for a traditional Christmas selection with enough musical craftsmanship to feel substantial. Singers at all levels benefit from the accompaniment track, which provides harmonic and rhythmic anchoring during rehearsals and performances.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody line carefully against the accompaniment track; your singers will want to lock into the recorded tempo early so the blend feels natural rather than competitive.
  • Pay attention to diction clarity when singing with the accompaniment; the recording will expose any muddy vowels or rushed consonants, so use it as a pedagogical mirror during rehearsal.
  • Build in rehearsal time without the accompaniment to establish your singers' internal pulse and confidence; introducing the track midway through rehearsal prevents over-reliance on the recording.

How to use it

Slot this into a winter concert as a reliable opener or closer, or pair it with other secular holiday pieces to build a thematic set. The recorded accompaniment makes it especially practical for groups with limited accompanist availability, freeing you to focus on choral balance and interpretation without worrying about live piano support.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with recorded accompaniments and matching recorded tempo
  • Blend and balance across multiple voice parts
  • Diction clarity in ensemble context
  • Interpretation of traditional choral literature
