Penny Rodriguez grew up in Peru, where her parents' missionary work shaped her early years and her artistic sensibility. She began piano study at age 6 and eventually earned her degree in piano performance from Moody/American Conservatory of Music, launching a career as a pianist, composer, and recording artist.
Across 11 recorded albums and numerous published works for piano and choir, Rodriguez has built a reputation for thoughtful composition. In recent years, she has concentrated her energies on creating art songs for solo voice and piano, pairing her music with poetry of literary merit. She resides in the Indianapolis area with her husband, Dave, and counts time with their grandchildren among life's greatest rewards.
Why we love this
Rodriguez brings the sensibility of an accomplished art song composer to this beloved hymn, resulting in a setting that honors both the text and the singers' musicality. The arrangement respects the hymn tune while creating genuine four-part writing that engages every voice. This is the kind of straightforward, singable octavo that lets your choir sound thoughtful and unified without requiring gymnastics.
What to expect
A gentle affirmation set to music that feels both intimate and communal. The writing creates space for reflection while maintaining the warmth and directness the text deserves.
Who it's for
This setting works for any choir looking for a meaningful sacred piece that doesn't demand virtuosity. It suits congregational worship services, concert programs with a spiritual theme, or moments when you want the text to shine without elaborate musical framing.
How to get the most out of it
Balance the melody between sections; the tune should feel owned by the whole choir, not carried primarily by sopranos.
Let the text phrasing guide your phrase breathing rather than forcing breath marks at bar lines.
Keep the harmonic rhythm clear by supporting the inner voices so the fuller chords land with quiet confidence.
How to use it
Consider this as a centerpiece for a service of thanksgiving or a concert segment exploring faith and gratitude. It pairs naturally with other hymn-based works or spiritual pieces and can serve as a meaningful closer that leaves singers and listeners in a reflective frame of mind.
