About the Composer: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan shaped choral music in Oklahoma classrooms for nearly three decades, directing award-winning programs at West Mid-High School and Norman High School while earning recognition as Teacher of the Year and the prestigious Director of Distinction Award from the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association. Her compositional output speaks to her pedagogical instincts: over 425 published octavos with major houses have sold more than two million copies, and her work has been performed across the continental United States, Canada, and Carnegie Hall.

Since stepping away from full-time teaching in 2004, Drennan has focused her energy on composition, arranging, and clinician work in 19 states and beyond. She has served as music and worship arts director at First Baptist Church in Norman and continues to lead composer weekends, music reading sessions for publishers, and collaborative performances. Her daughter Emily, a musical theater performer in New York, and her ongoing studio and symphonic work keep her actively engaged with performers at every level.

Why we love this

Drennan brings the sensibilities of a lifelong choral director to this piano/vocal setting, and it shows in the vocal writing. The accompaniment supports rather than overshadows the singer, and the text comes through with clarity and warmth. A seven-page arrangement of a beloved hymn text is substantial enough to feel like a real artistic statement without demanding excessive rehearsal time from your soloist.

What to expect

This arrangement honors the contemplative beauty of the hymn text while allowing room for personal interpretation. The piano part is supportive and musically engaging, creating a complete musical picture that feels both reverent and intimate.

Who it's for

Solo singers preparing sacred music for worship services, recitals, or auditions will find this a natural fit. Church musicians and pianists looking for accessible yet artful settings of hymn texts will appreciate both the quality of the writing and the practical length of the score.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the vocal line so that the familiar melody emerges clearly while the piano sustains harmonic interest beneath it. The accompaniment deserves attention, but the voice must remain primary.
  • Honor the spiritual quality of the text by resisting any urge to rush the tempo. Let the message breathe, especially through longer phrases.
  • Work with your accompanist on dynamic shaping in the piano part. Small, intentional crescendos and releases in the accompaniment will enhance the vocalist's phrasing without needing explicit direction.

How to use it

Feature this as a special music offering during worship or as an art song recital piece. The familiar text paired with Drennan's compositional voice makes it accessible to congregations and audiences while maintaining artistic substance.
