Description

Things happening for a double bass performer moves between soundscapes, cool jazz elements and expressivity. Nora Gomringer's poem Wilson Opera Monologue provided the template for the mixed form of language and sound. The expressivity and the strongly formulated rhythm of the monologue create a dynamic that is interrupted, questioned, taken over, contrasted and commented on by the double bass. Words and music are led to an ever-increasing cyclone of expression, consisting of rhythm, loops, noises and tonally flowing processes. The double bass player is not only in demand as a musician, but also as a sharp and impulsive text interpreter. Linguistic style, sound and performance merge into a poetic interdisciplinary form, in which coolness and impulsive impetus create inner tension. The text and sound material returns again and again in variations according to the principle of micro-repetition and unfolds a flowing form between chamber music and performance consisting of three elements: a double bass player, a monologue and music. Minas Borboudakis, February 2023.

More about this title

About the Composer: Minas Borboudakis

Minas Borboudakis is a composer and sound artist working at the intersection of contemporary classical music and interdisciplinary performance. His work frequently engages with text, spoken word, and unconventional instrumental techniques, treating language and sound as equal partners in creating meaning.

Borboudakis's compositional approach emphasizes texture, rhythm, and the expressive possibilities of individual instruments. He draws inspiration from poetry and visual art, creating pieces that demand performers think beyond traditional musical notation and embrace interpretive responsibility.

Why we love this

This score refuses easy categorization, blending spoken word, instrumental virtuosity, and electroacoustic elements into a single coherent experience. Players who tackle it step beyond the safety of purely instrumental performance and discover how rhythm, tone, and language create meaning together. The result is a work that challenges perceptions of what a double bass solo can do.

What to expect

The music moves through shifting emotional landscapes, moments of cool, introspective jazz sensibility give way to urgent rhythmic torrents and textural exploration. Coolness and impulsive drive coexist in constant tension, creating an unsettled energy that never fully resolves.

Who it's for

This work suits advanced intermediate bassists who are comfortable with extended techniques and want to expand their artistic voice beyond traditional repertoire. It appeals to performers drawn to contemporary music and willing to integrate spoken word and theatrical elements into their practice.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat the spoken text with the same rhythmic precision you would apply to a fast passage; the monologue drives the form and deserves exact attention to phrasing and tempo.
  • Explore the boundary between pitch and noise deliberately. The score creates tension between clean tones and textural sounds, so commit fully to whichever world you're inhabiting at each moment.
  • Study how the bass comments on and contradicts the text rather than accompanying it. The relationship is conversational and sometimes confrontational.
  • Use the loops and micro-repetitions as anchors for your own interpretive choices. Repetition invites variation, so look for where you can shift emphasis, color, or intensity within the recurring material.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece for a contemporary music concert or recital focused on interdisciplinary work. It also serves as a compelling bridge between a traditional classical concert and more experimental performance formats, signaling to audiences that the evening will challenge conventional expectations.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended double bass techniques (col legno, sul ponticello, harmonics, and other unconventional sounds)
  • Rhythmic independence and precision in complex, asymmetrical meters
  • Performing spoken text with musical intention and dramatic awareness
  • Interpreting contemporary notation and composer intent beyond standard scores
  • Building coherent interpretations of through-composed forms with repetitive elements
  • Balancing technical execution with artistic expression in minimalist and maximal moments
