More about this title

About the Author: Charles Dowd

Charles Dowd

Charles Dowd's percussion training spans classical and contemporary idioms, earning degrees in percussion performance and doctoral study in timpani at Juilliard under Saul Goodman, the New York Philharmonic's legendary timpanist. His career has moved fluidly across genres: he played jazz drums with Don Ellis and Oscar Williams, recorded regularly at RCA Studios in New York, and performed rock with Cory Lerios of Pablo Cruise while freelancing with the San Francisco Symphony.

Today, Dowd serves as principal timpanist and percussionist with the Eugene Symphony and conducts the University of Oregon Percussion Ensemble, focusing on new and experimental music. As a Ludwig clinician and author of multiple percussion method books including works on drumset and vibes, he brings both deep classical training and practical studio experience to his writing. He performs regularly at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Oregon and serves as principal timpanist for the Carillo Music Festival in California.

Why we love this

Dowd draws from his experience as a professional orchestral timpanist and university conductor to create exercises that address real technical challenges timpanists face in ensemble settings. The breadth of coverage—from fundamental sticking patterns through advanced cross rhythms and tuning studies—makes this an exceptionally practical resource that grows with a student's abilities rather than becoming obsolete after a few weeks of use.

What to expect

Working through these exercises feels less like drilling repetitive patterns and more like solving musical puzzles. Each section builds logically from basic technique into musically engaging combinations that keep your hands and ears engaged.

Who it's for

This collection serves timpanists preparing for orchestra auditions, college-level performance majors, and serious high school percussionists ready to deepen their technical foundation. It's equally valuable for directors building a timpani program or teaching a percussionist who needs systematic, focused development beyond what ensemble repertoire provides alone.

How to get the most out of it

  • Approach muffling exercises with consistent hand placement; changing where your fingers contact the head will affect both tone and the ease of subsequent sticking patterns.
  • Build roll endurance gradually by setting a timer for short intervals rather than pushing for one long roll; quality matters more than duration, and fatigue compromises the evenness Dowd's exercises demand.
  • When tackling cross rhythms, isolate the sticking pattern on a practice pad first, then transfer to the timpani only after the hands feel secure.

How to use it

Assign specific sections to timpanists based on their current challenges rather than working through sequentially; a player struggling with rolls benefits from those exercises immediately, while another might need staccato work first. The book's density means even modest weekly assignments (3-5 exercises) will drive noticeable progress over a semester.

Skills your students will build

  • Controlled sticking patterns (single strokes, doubles, and mixed combinations)
  • Clean muffling technique for tone control and quick dampening
  • Even rolls at varying dynamics and tempos
  • Staccato articulation with consistent attack and decay
  • Accurate tuning and pitch matching across drum changes
  • Cross rhythms and syncopated patterns in both hands
