About the Composer: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin brings a distinctive blend of compositional sophistication and practical musicianship to choral writing. An ASCAP award-winning composer and conductor, Gilpin has led performances at premier venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Ryman Auditorium, Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, and Harpa Concert Hall. His work extends beyond the concert stage; he serves as Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press and has composed for film, including the award-winning score for "Rosie's Rescue." Gilpin collaborates regularly with professional singers and ensembles, including a world premiere arrangement created with opera singer Angela Brown and the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir.

Beyond his music career, Gilpin pursued additional professional certification as a financial coach and organizing specialist, founding Maestro Organizing and appearing on network television and the series "Hoarders." He holds membership in ACDA, NAfME, SAG-AFTRA, and maintains Life Loyal status in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Why we love this

Gilpin crafts 2-part writing that sounds mature and emotionally resonant without overwhelming young or developing singers. The text-driven approach respects the poetry while the music reinforces meaning through intelligent harmonic and melodic choices, making rehearsal focused and rewarding.

What to expect

The music evokes introspection and gentle motion, with harmonic language that feels contemporary yet grounded. The 2-part texture creates intimacy while remaining clear and singable.

Who it's for

This piece suits middle school and high school choirs seeking repertoire with literary substance and accessible vocal writing. It works equally well for community choirs and sacred music programs looking for a secular work with emotional maturity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the text expressively; Gilpin's harmony supports emotional arc, so let dynamic changes follow the meaning rather than mechanical crescendos.
  • Attend to blend in the unison or near-unison passages; these moments anchor the piece and benefit from consistent vowel shapes across your section.
  • Use the PianoTrax accompaniment to establish character early in rehearsal, then gradually reduce reliance on it as singers internalize their parts and can focus on textual delivery.

How to use it

Program this alongside other Gilpin works or as a contemplative moment in a concert that mixes styles and moods. The moderate length and accessible difficulty make it suitable for mid-season concerts or festival performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing musically written parts that reinforce emotional text
  • Blending in 2-part harmony with independent voice leading
  • Connecting lyrical content to harmonic and melodic shape
  • Following a more sophisticated compositional voice
