John Stafford Smith (1750-1836) was an English composer and church musician whose career spanned the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Though he composed numerous vocal works and hymn tunes during his lifetime, Smith is remembered primarily for one melody: the tune "Anacreon in Heaven," which would eventually become the musical foundation for "The Star-Spangled Banner" when Francis Scott Key set his poem to it in 1814.
Smith's melodic gift shows clearly in this enduring tune. Its shape and phrasing make it memorable without sacrificing musical substance, a quality that has allowed it to serve multiple texts and purposes across centuries. For choral directors, Smith's original composition offers a foundation strong enough to support both the weight of patriotic meaning and thoughtful musical interpretation.
