About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske holds the rank of professor of music at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he teaches piano and composition. He completed his undergraduate degree summa cum laude at PLNU, earned a master's degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music under the mentorship of Joanne Baker, and received his Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California, where he studied with Stewart Gordon.

Labenske's achievements span performance, education, and composition. He performed in the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Olympic Games and was recognized as an Academic All-American Scholar. His compositional catalog includes over 700 published works and arrangements across multiple difficulty levels. His chamber work "A Walk Through the Valley" was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association for their 2019 National Conference. Beyond his solo career as a concert artist and collaborative performer, he has authored articles for American Music Teacher, Piano Magazine, and California Music Teacher. His sacred music publications include the Sunday Morning Companion library and Play Praise, a graded piano series that introduces contemporary worship music to developing musicians.

Why we love this

Labenske's arrangements preserve the emotional core of these beloved contemporary praise songs while crafting textures that sound sophisticated without demanding virtuosity. The late intermediate level hits the sweet spot where students can experience the fullness of ensemble-quality voicings without the technical barriers that would keep these spiritually resonant pieces out of reach. Including lyrics makes this collection valuable for worship settings where the marriage of text and music deepens understanding of the material.

What to expect

These arrangements capture the emotional immediacy of contemporary praise music while adding harmonic depth and pianistic interest that keeps you engaged through repeated performances. The writing feels supportive rather than showy; each song breathes naturally, allowing the spiritual intention behind the lyrics to shine through your playing.

Who it's for

This collection serves pianists in worship contexts at late intermediate level, whether you play in church services, lead congregational singing, or perform for prayer meetings and special services. It works equally well for motivated high school students exploring sacred music and adult learners returning to piano with spiritual motivation. The included lyrics and accessible arrangements make it an inviting entry point into contemporary worship music for intermediate pianists.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay attention to dynamic shaping within each phrase rather than treating whole sections as uniform in volume. These songs build their power through subtle intensification, and your touch should reflect the arc of the text.
  • Use the provided performance times strategically when adapting arrangements for different service lengths. Determining whether to play repeats, extend transitions, or streamline endings becomes straightforward when you know the stakes.
  • Balance harmonic richness with clarity in the right hand. Labenske's voicings are full, but melody lines need room to breathe so listeners can follow the song's familiar contours.

How to use it

Feature individual songs from this collection throughout the church year as prelude or offertory music, selecting pieces that align with liturgical themes or sermon focus. Students preparing for recitals centered on faith-based music will find polished, singable repertoire that audiences instantly recognize and connect with emotionally. This book also serves as core material in a graded curriculum exploring contemporary worship literature alongside traditional sacred piano repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing melody with complex harmonic accompaniment figures
  • Interpreting dynamic and expressive markings that enhance textual meaning
  • Sustaining musical phrasing across longer form arrangements
  • Sight-reading passages with mixed rhythmic patterns and jazz-influenced voicings
  • Applying rubato and tempo flexibility to contemporary worship idioms
