His contributions to music education extend well beyond his classroom; he has mentored future educators as a guest lecturer at the University of Toronto, McMaster, and York University, and regularly shares insights through presentations at Ontario Music Educators Association conferences and published articles in professional journals.

Recognition for Austin's leadership arrived in consecutive years. He received the inaugural Beckwith Award from the Canadian Music Centre in 2020, followed by the Keith Mann Outstanding Band Directors Award from Musicfest Canada and the Canadian National Arts Centre in 2022.
