Description
This suite conveys some of the most deeply felt emotions of the holy Christmas season. Performers and listeners alike will experience the wonder and expectancy of the Advent in the melodious "Still, Still, Still." The lush harmonies of "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" bring thoughts of the newborn Baby Jesus in the manger. Celebrate His birth with a jubilant, Classical-styled arrangement of "Joy to the World." Christmas is a wonderful time of rejoicing, and The Nativity captures this celebration through expressive, melodic pictures and rich stylistic contrasts.

About the Composer: Cindy Berry

Cindy Berry

Cindy Berry grew up in Houston, Texas, and studied at Houston Baptist University, where she developed her voice as a composer and arranger. Her catalog spans sacred choral literature, children's musicals, and piano collections, all infused with her deep commitment to music as spiritual expression. Berry has shaped her craft through extensive work as a clinician, leading composer workshops and residencies across the country while maintaining her role as a church musician and children's choir director in Killeen, Texas.

Throughout her career, Berry has received recurring ASCAP Special Awards in recognition of her contributions to sacred music. Alongside her husband Bruce, a Minister of Music, she continues to compose works rooted in faith and worship, viewing each piece as an offering that connects performers and listeners to the sacred.

Why we love this

Berry's gift for vocal melody translates beautifully to the keyboard in this suite, giving pianists expressive, singable lines that invite interpretation without demanding pyrotechnics. The stylistic variety—from the quiet contemplation of 'Still, Still, Still' to the triumphant energy of 'Joy to the World'—creates a satisfying arc that works equally well as a recital set or as coordinated selections for a Christmas program.

What to expect

This suite captures the emotional breadth of the Christmas season in miniature. You move from the hushed anticipation and yearning of Advent through the tender reverence of the nativity scene, then emerge into bright celebration—each moment feels earned and deeply felt rather than sentimental.

Who it's for

Pianists with solid technique in both hands will find this suite approachable and musically rewarding. The intermediate level makes it suitable for advanced high school students, college pianists, or serious adult hobbyists preparing Christmas recital repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening of 'Still, Still, Still' with gentle rubato to mirror the song's meditative quality; the melody needs room to breathe rather than metronomic precision.
  • Allow the rich harmonies in 'Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming' to bloom by holding longer note values slightly and letting resonance build between chords.
  • Approach the Classical arrangement of 'Joy to the World' with clarity and articulation in the right-hand passagework to highlight the period style without rushing the tempo.
  • Use pedal mindfully throughout; sustain rich harmonic moments but release when texture shifts to preserve definition.

How to use it

These three pieces work wonderfully as a thematic recital grouping, or you can program individual selections to complement choral offerings or instrumental ensembles at Christmas services and concerts. The suite's spiritual depth and stylistic range make it ideal for pianist soloists in church or secular holiday programming.
