Alice Parker brought together a deep study of American folk traditions with rigorous compositional training, earning degrees from Smith College and the Juilliard School where she developed her formative partnership with conductor Robert Shaw. Her prolific catalog of over five hundred published works spans operas, cantatas, song cycles, and countless choral settings of folk melodies, hymns, and spirituals that remain essential to the choral repertoire globally.

Beyond composition, Parker became a leading voice in choral pedagogy and worship music, founding MELODIOUS ACCORD, INC. in 1985 to champion the melody as the foundation of vocal music. She authored influential books on melodic practice, choral improvisation, and congregational singing, and earned recognition including the Robert Shaw Award from the American Choral Directors Association, the Harvard Glee Club Foundation Medal, and six honorary doctorates.
