About the Composer: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin brings decades of experience as both a conductor and composer to every project he undertakes. His work has graced some of the world's most prestigious venues, from Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York to the Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall in London, and venues across Iceland. An ASCAP award-winning composer, Gilpin serves as Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press and maintains active membership in ACDA, NAfME, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Beyond the concert hall, Gilpin has expanded his creative reach into film scoring and collaborative premiere projects, including work with celebrated opera singer Angela Brown. His 2021 film score for "Rosie's Rescue" earned Best Score honors, further demonstrating his versatility across musical genres and formats.

Why we love this

Gilpin writes holiday music that respects the intelligence of both singers and listeners. Rather than leaning into sentimentality, this arrangement finds warmth and depth in a straightforward, singable setting that lets the text and melody do the emotional work. The 3-part mixed voicing keeps the focus on musical substance while remaining accessible for most community and school choirs.

What to expect

There's an understated grace here. The arrangement celebrates the quiet beauty of a winter evening without relying on overstated effects or elaborate textures. You'll find yourself drawn to the clarity of the harmonic writing and the way the melody carries the story forward with directness and sincerity.

Who it's for

This works equally well for emerging choirs building their holiday repertoire and experienced ensembles seeking a fresh alternative to heavily arranged seasonal standards. It's designed to sound confident and polished without demanding extensive rehearsal time, making it practical for programs with limited preparation weeks.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the inner voices to ensure harmonic clarity without overshadowing the melodic line; this exposes any tuning issues in the progression.
  • Let the text shape your phrasing rather than relying on conventional cadence points; Gilpin's language-driven writing rewards attention to how words naturally fall in the melody.
  • Test the key with your ensemble early. The simplicity of the arrangement means any pitch issues become immediately apparent.

How to use it

Pair this with one or two more elaborate holiday treatments to create a balanced concert set that moves between intimate and festive moments. Its 11-page length makes it an ideal anchor for a set that includes shorter carols or contemporary secular holiday pieces.
