About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and later earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he subsequently taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His concert career has taken him across the United States and Mexico as a solo recitalist and featured artist with major orchestras, including a performance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra following his win in the Nina Plant Wideman Competition.
Though Martin's compositions and arrangements have graced stages from Carnegie Hall to regional theaters, his primary focus in recent years has centered on church music. He divides his time between concert performances and collaborating with worship musicians and congregations, creating accessible yet meaningful sacred works. Martin resides in Austin, Texas with his family.
Why we love this
Martin's gift for pairing deeply scriptural themes with singable, approachable melodies makes this anthem feel both substantial and immediately accessible to your choir. The instrumental pak format gives you flexibility in how you voice the accompaniment, and the underlying message of trust and hope carries enough weight to resonate during any season of the church year.
What to expect
The music conveys quiet confidence rather than bombast. There is warmth in the harmonic progressions and a sense of gentle uplift that invites singers and listeners alike into a space of reflection and affirmation.
Who it's for
This anthem suits choirs of mixed ability working in congregational settings where both musical quality and accessibility matter. Directors seeking repertoire that speaks to themes of spiritual trust, particularly for services focused on hope or assurance, will find this piece naturally suited to the occasion.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the choir's melodic line against the instrumental parts so that the text remains crystal clear; Martin's harmonic language supports the lyrics without overshadowing them.
- Let the congregation feel invited into the closing rather than sung at; this piece works best when the affirmation of faith seems genuinely shared.
- Shape the longer phrases with subtle dynamic shaping that builds toward moments of textual emphasis rather than sudden volume shifts.
How to use it
Consider this for services centered on stewardship, faith development, or hope; the scriptural foundation gives it weight beyond a single Sunday. The instrumental pak format also makes it feasible to perform whether your accompany forces are full or sparse, so it adapts well to different seasons of the liturgical year.
