About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His performance resume spans solo recitals, symphony orchestra collaborations across the United States and Mexico, and a nationally broadcast recital from Mexico City. He won the Nina Plant Wideman Competition and performed with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra, establishing himself as a versatile concert artist.
Martin has channeled his compositional energy toward sacred music and church music settings, moving from the concert hall to worship spaces where his work now reaches congregations across the United States and Canada. His pieces appear in prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall alongside more intimate performance spaces, reflecting a career devoted to making music accessible across different contexts and audiences. He lives in Austin, Texas with his family.
Why we love this
Martin's ability to blend instrumental color with choral writing creates an arrangement that feels both festive and contemplative, making room for genuine spiritual resonance during the holiday season. The orchestration is practical without being sparse; each part contributes meaningfully, giving musicians something rewarding to play rather than accompaniment that sits in the background.
What to expect
Warm, introspective, and affirming. The piece unfolds with a quiet confidence, allowing the text to breathe while the instrumental colors create a sense of sanctuary and renewal.
Who it's for
Directors programming Christmas services or winter concerts who want an arrangement with genuine musicality and spiritual depth. Both experienced choirs and developing ensembles will find this accessible, provided you have access to the instrumentation listed.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the vibraphone delicately against the vocal line; it should shimmer rather than dominate, especially during reflective passages.
- Let the strings and winds find their natural blend early in rehearsal, then add the choir once the instrumental foundation feels settled.
- Shape phrases through the piano's accompaniment, using it as the emotional anchor that guides singers and players together.
How to use it
Use this as a centerpiece for a contemplative portion of your Christmas service, perhaps as a transition moment between congregational singing and spoken reflection. It works equally well as a concert finale that sends the audience out with quiet strength rather than high energy.
Skills your students will build
- Blending instrumental timbres with vocal tone
- Sustaining soft dynamics with pitch accuracy
- Responding to a flexible harmonic palette that emphasizes color over rhythmic drive
- Ensemble listening across mixed instrumentation
