Description
"Grace of Oaths" was commissioned by the Symphonic Band of the Seinan Jo Gakuin University and the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan. The University was established by a Southern Baptist missionary; therefore they commissioned a chorale piece for the anniversary. Lush harmonies, well crafted themes and balanced ensemble writing make this an excellent selection for concert or contest use.

About the Composer: Naoya Wada

Naoya Wada

Naoya Wada, born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka in 1986, has established himself as a leading voice in contemporary educational band composition. His commissions span concert bands, string orchestras, and small ensembles performed by groups from elementary through professional levels across the globe.

Wada's contributions to the field have earned him multiple recognitions, including several Bandworld Top 100 citations and J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice awards. In 2009, he received the 42nd Kitakyushu Cultural Award in recognition of his artistic achievements. He regularly serves as a guest conductor and clinician, bringing his perspective on ensemble writing and musical development directly to educational programs.

Why we love this

Wada crafts the kind of Grade 3 score that doesn't compromise on compositional substance. The lush harmonies and balanced writing give your band real material to sink their teeth into without overwhelming younger players, making this equally effective for contest preparation or concert programming.

What to expect

The piece unfolds with contemplative elegance, its well-crafted themes supported by rich harmonic textures that give the band a sense of purpose and weight. There's an understated majesty here: the kind of reverent sound that emerges from precise, thoughtful ensemble playing rather than brute force.

Who it's for

This score is designed for concert bands at the Grade 3 level seeking repertoire with artistic depth and contest viability. Directors programming sacred or ceremonial works will find strong ensemble writing that rewards both rehearsal time and performance effort.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the chorale lines with phrase direction rather than heavy dynamic swells; the writing itself contains the melodic momentum.
  • Ensure the section parts blend vertically by balancing inner voices against the outer melodic lines during sectional rehearsals.
  • Attend to the harmonic clarity in key modulations by cleaning intonation in those transitional moments.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece for a concert exploring spiritual or commemorative themes, or include it in a contest set where you want to demonstrate musical maturity alongside technical facility. Its Grade 3 accessibility paired with sophisticated writing makes it an ideal showcase for bands moving toward more ambitious repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing harmonic texture across multiple voice parts
  • Sustaining phrases with direction in slower, chorale-based writing
  • Executing key modulations with clean intonation and clarity
  • Responding to nuanced conductor interpretation in non-virtuosic contexts
