About the Artist: Tom Fettke

Tom Fettke

Tom Fettke has spent over five decades creating and arranging choral music that speaks directly to church and school musicians. A California-credentialed music educator with degrees from Oakland City College and California State University at Hayward, he taught vocal music in public schools and served as director of choral activities for the Redwood Christian School System while simultaneously directing choirs in churches ranging from small congregations to large ministries. His compositional output spans hundreds of published works and recordings.

Fettke's influence on congregational singing reaches millions. The Majesty and Glory of Your Name, one of his signature choral works, is performed regularly by thousands of choirs worldwide. He shaped modern church worship through his editorial work on The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration (1986) and The Celebration Hymnal, both landmarks in contemporary liturgical music. His commitment to writing practical, engaging music that serves real congregations and classrooms has defined his career since the 1970s.

Why we love this

Fettke builds this anthem with clear momentum, letting it unfold from foundation to climax. The Holy Manna tune provides immediate familiarity for many choirs, while his new composition transforms it into something that rewards both rehearsal and performance. Brass accompaniment this strong elevates the entire choir sound without demanding instrumental virtuosity.

What to expect

The piece builds steadily from its opening statement through layers of reinforce sound, arriving at a powerful final affirmation. You feel the theological confidence of the text reflected in the music's harmonic and orchestral choices.

Who it's for

Church choirs seeking contemporary anthems with accessible melodies and strong accompaniment support. School choirs with access to brass instruments will find this work straightforward to learn and impactful to perform.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the choir's entrance against the opening brass statement so the melody cuts through rather than blends into the accompaniment.
  • Let the dynamic shape follow the text's theological arc; the progression toward 'Amen' should feel inevitable, not forced.
  • Schedule sectional rehearsals focused on the brass entrances, even if your brass players are comfortable readers; locking the choir's releases with the final chord matters more than individual instrumental precision.

How to use it

Reserve this for moments when you want an anthem with genuine excitement and forward motion. It works well as a second-half opener in a concert or worship service where you've established a reflective opening piece. The length (approximately 2 minutes 40 seconds) fits easily into most liturgical structures.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with precise cutoffs synchronized to brass instrumentation
  • Sustaining phrase momentum across longer musical arcs
  • Balancing choral blend while maintaining textual clarity over full accompaniment
