About the Arranger: Sherry Blevins

Sherry Blevins

Sherry Blevins brings together compositional ambition with real classroom experience. Her work has been published by major houses including Alfred Music, Hinshaw, and Fred Bock, with over 27 titles in print since 2018. She has conducted choirs across the country and internationally, from Oklahoma All-State Mixed Chorus to Opera Lucca's Composer's Institute in Italy, and served as Past President of ACDA's Southern Region and Artistic Director of the Chattanooga Boys Choir.

Blevins is known for writing that singers genuinely enjoy performing. Her melodies sit naturally in the voice, her harmonies are tuneful without being simplistic, and her accompaniments support rather than overshadow the singers. In recent years, she has focused on collaborative composing projects with school choirs, resulting in works that reflect the voices and experiences of the students who premiere them.

Why we love this

Blevins takes the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" and weaves it into a meditation on generosity that feels completely fresh. The arrangement respects the familiar melody while adding harmonic color and textural variety across its 2-part and 3-part options, giving you flexibility to program it with mixed or changing ensembles. The writing is singable throughout, with clean voice leading that young singers can master quickly without sacrificing musical depth.

What to expect

Quietly joyful and reflective. The arrangement honors the spiritual simplicity of "Simple Gifts" while adding modern harmonic warmth that feels generous without being saccharine. There's a quality of thoughtfulness here; the piece invites singers and listeners to sit with the idea of giving as both an act and a gift in itself.

Who it's for

Mid-level choirs with consistent attendance who want seasonal repertoire that goes beyond the obvious. This works equally well for treble, tenor-bass, or mixed ensembles, since Blevins offers multiple voicing options in one score.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody with the supporting lines so that the familiar tune doesn't overwhelm the new harmonic material Blevins provides. Let the countermelodies breathe.
  • Pay attention to the text setting and phrasing around "The Gift of Giving." The text should feel conversational and warm, not ceremonial.
  • Experiment with the optional 3-part voicing to add richness in key moments. Switching between 2-part and 3-part sections creates dynamic shape without needing tempo or dynamic changes.

How to use it

This pairs beautifully in a fall or winter concert focused on gratitude and community service, where it can stand alone or anchor a thematic set. It also works well as a concert opener that sets a reflective, inclusive tone before moving into other repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining a melody while listening to and blending with harmonic accompaniment
