About the Arranger: Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist began playing piano by ear at age four in northwestern Pennsylvania and later earned formal training at the Warren Conservatory of Music. She completed her B.S. in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia, then taught vocal music in upstate New York while working as an instructor for Yamaha Music School internationally.

A visit to her songwriter brother John W. Thompson in Nashville led to work transcribing piano arrangements, launching what would become a prolific arranging career spanning over four hundred solo piano collections. Her arrangements are known for their craft, accessibility, and suitability across traditional, blended, and contemporary worship settings. Since becoming an Alfred author in 2010, Tornquist has remained focused on creating resources that serve pianists of all levels, bringing fresh harmonic and rhythmic contexts to well-known melodies.

Why we love this

This collection assembles the most significant contemporary Christian songs of recent years, giving you 33 titles that span worship standards, gospel ballads, and modern praise songs your congregation already knows and loves. Tornquist's arrangements respect both the melodic integrity of each song and the realities of the church pianist, with fingering, chord symbols, and phrasing marked throughout so players can focus on leading worship rather than deciphering notation. The inclusion of lyrics makes every arrangement immediately functional for congregational singing or solo performance.

What to expect

Opening this book, you encounter the sound of contemporary worship rendered with clarity and warmth. Tornquist's arrangements honor the original melodic shapes and emotional intent of each song while keeping the piano writing accessible; the result feels conversational rather than elaborate, inviting the listener in rather than demanding technical virtuosity. Whether played as solo reflections or as backings for congregational voices, these arrangements carry the comfort of familiar melodies paired with fresh harmonic perspectives.

Who it's for

This book serves church pianists who lead worship services, whether in traditional or contemporary settings, as well as beginning to early-intermediate piano students seeking repertoire with spiritual meaning and immediate musical gratification. Anyone preparing for a church service, leading sing-alongs, or building a hymnal-alternative repertoire will find these 33 arrangements both playable and musically substantial.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the chord symbols to add harmonic color beyond the written notes; these guides invite interpretation rather than lock down a single voicing, letting your own musical instincts shape the arrangement.
  • Pay close attention to the marked phrasing and breathing points, particularly in the ballads like 'You Raise Me Up' and 'The Prayer,' where the written indications guide the song's emotional arc.
  • Balance the melody line with supporting voices so the lyrics remain clear when singing along; resist the urge to fill every moment with dense left-hand voicings.
  • Practice the key transitions and modulations slowly before performing; many contemporary worship songs move up in key near the end, and smooth execution here makes the entire arrangement feel polished.

How to use it

Program individual titles from this collection during Sunday worship services, choosing songs that align with the liturgical season or sermon theme; the variety of emotional content means you can build a complete year of worship music without reaching beyond this one resource. Use selections as prelude or postlude material, or pair multiple arrangements in a set to create a cohesive musical meditation for a special service. This book also works well as a teaching tool, offering intermediate students a repertoire of contemporary songs that deepens their engagement with modern Christian music.
