About the Composer: Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips has shaped string education across North America through decades of teaching, conducting, and composing. A bassist himself, he spent 27 years building the Saline, Michigan string program into a national model, directing ensembles that performed at the Midwest Clinic and the White House. He founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, an internationally recognized folk-fiddling ensemble, and has served as resident conductor for prestigious festivals and all-state orchestras across multiple states.

Phillips is prolific across multiple genres and formats: he has authored over 25 instructional series (including Sound Innovations and the groundbreaking eclectic styles collections like Jazz Philharmonic and Latin Philharmonic) and published more than 200 works for orchestras and bands. An award-winning ASCAP composer, he has taught thousands of string students through his published pieces and instructional DVDs. His work consistently appears at major clinics and conferences, reflecting his deep commitment to making music education engaging and stylistically rich.

Why we love this

A composer who plays bass understands exactly what young players need to sound good and feel confident on stage. Phillips writes a lyric melody that sits naturally in the bass register, keeps the technical demands reasonable (1st through 3rd position work, with just a touch of 4th), and surrounds the soloist with full, warm string textures that make everyone feel supported. The optional section part means you can feature one player or your entire bass section, giving you real programming flexibility.

What to expect

Lush and singing, this piece gives bass players the rare chance to carry the tune. The string orchestra accompaniment provides warmth and fullness without overwhelming the soloist, creating an intimate yet grand sound that feels more sophisticated than the Grade 2.5 level might suggest. At just over two minutes, it leaves room for crystalline phrasing and genuine musical breathing.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 2.5 level will find this piece ideal for showcasing bass players who are ready for a lyric solo but still developing their position work. Directors looking for accessible concert or contest repertoire that highlights an underserved section will appreciate how Phillips writes music that feels both substantial and achievable. Young bass players gain confidence when they hear themselves playing the melody within a full orchestral sound.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the bass melody with careful attention to breath points and phrase endings; string players benefit from thinking about the solo as one long musical line rather than a series of separate bow strokes.
  • Balance matters between soloist and accompaniment. The string orchestra texture should enhance rather than cover the solo voice, so rehearse the accompaniment at a dynamic level that lets the bass part sing through clearly.
  • Work the optional bass part separately with section players before full rehearsals. This allows non-soloists to feel ownership of their musical contribution and understand their role in supporting the feature.

How to use it

Program this as a bass solo feature during a pops or family concert, pairing it with contrasting repertoire that highlights other sections. Its length and moderate difficulty make it an excellent choice for spring festivals or adjudicated events where you want to showcase section depth. It also works as a teaching piece within your curriculum if you are correlating with String Explorer Book Two, Unit 2.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position with brief excursions into 4th position
  • Sustaining long, lyric melodic lines with consistent bow control
  • Balancing individual voice within full ensemble texture
  • Phrasing and shaping a solo melody appropriate to an orchestral context
  • Accompanying and supporting a featured soloist with ensemble sensitivity
