Description
Coordination occurs when your body movements allow you to strike the elements of the drumset at a precise moment in time. The Coordination Code uses a unique system of notation to teach your body to achieve complete coordination when performing two or more movements at one time, and gain a new set of tools to utilize in your playing. The enclosed poster is a useful reference when learning or teaching the notation system. To benefit every drummer, the book is organized in five difficulty levels ranging from simple to professional. In addition to helping coordination, this book will build confidence, enhance your creativity, and increase your strength on both sides of your body. An MP3 CD is included with recorded examples of every exercise in the book.

More about this title

About the Author: Karl Sloman

Karl Sloman

Karl Sloman brings both classical training and real-world performance experience to drumset pedagogy. A multi-instrumentalist who has mastered nine instruments, he specializes on drums and performs with the progressive metal band Opus Rex while also leading Trainwreck, an ensemble of disabled student musicians. His work in adaptive music education earned recognition from Rush in 2012 and was documented in the film Walk the Walk. Beyond the stage, Sloman serves in the Canadian Army, where he trains military personnel in music and ensemble performance.

Dom Famularo joins Sloman as co-author, bringing his own extensive background in drumset instruction and coordination studies to this method.

Why we love this

The Coordination Code solves a real technical gap in drumset pedagogy by isolating and systematizing the specific physical skill that separates competent players from coordinated ones. The five-level progression means you can place students at their actual starting point rather than forcing them through material designed for a mythical average, and the included poster becomes a permanent classroom reference that clarifies the notation system without requiring you to re-explain it. Most importantly, drummers of all abilities report genuine gains in left and right hand independence and confidence, which translates directly into their ability to tackle more complex grooves and fills.

What to expect

Learning through The Coordination Code means moving from tentative, separate movements to a unified physical response where your body knows exactly when to strike each element of the kit. As coordination improves, what once felt effortful becomes instinctive, and you discover freedom to focus on dynamics, feel, and musicality rather than counting down to your next hit.

Who it's for

Drummers at any level who want to develop genuine coordination between hands and feet rather than relying on muscle memory alone. The five-level structure works equally well for beginners building foundational independence and for advanced players looking to refine their technique and unlock new creative possibilities on the kit.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the exercises in order within each difficulty level rather than skipping ahead; the progression is designed so your body learns the pattern sequentially before adding complexity.
  • Use the MP3 CD to hear the timing and feel of each exercise at tempo, then slow your playback speed to match your current pace before gradually increasing.
  • Practice each exercise until it feels automatic, not just until you can play it once; coordination requires muscle memory that only builds through repetition at consistent tempos.
  • Reference the poster frequently while working through the book, especially when the notation feels unfamiliar, so you internalize the system rather than constantly translating it.

How to use it

Use this book as the core coordination curriculum for your drumset students throughout the school year, assigning exercises from the appropriate level during weekly lessons and tracking progress through the five difficulty tiers. The poster works well displayed in the rehearsal space as a reference for all drummers working through the book, and the MP3 examples support independent practice between lessons, building accountability and faster skill development.

Skills your students will build

  • Hand and foot independence across all four limbs
  • Reading and interpreting the Coordination Code notation system
  • Precise timing and synchronization of simultaneous movements
  • Strength and endurance in both sides of the body
  • Confidence in executing multi-limb patterns at tempo
  • Foundation for executing complex grooves and fills
