About the Arranger: Jeff Funk

Jeff Funk

Jeff Funk launched his publishing career at eighteen with "Fly to the Sky Tonight" and has since become a prolific voice in choral arranging, with over 1.7 million copies of his works in circulation. A summa cum laude graduate of Millikin University (1993), Funk has also ventured into broader creative work, including composing the opening number "Believe in the Music" for NBC's 2000 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast and publishing fiction in anthology collections.

Beyond music, Funk serves as an assistant editor for Necro Publications and has appeared in independent film. He lives in Auburn, Indiana.

Why we love this

This arrangement captures everything that makes the original such a cultural touchstone while remaining genuinely easy to teach and perform. The unison/optional two-part writing gives young singers confidence without sacrificing the infectious charm and energy that audiences expect from this holiday staple. Funk's experience arranging for young ensembles shines through in music that's both accessible and genuinely fun to sing.

What to expect

Sparkly, playful, and instantly recognizable, this arrangement radiates holiday joy without requiring heavy vocal lifting from young performers. It bounces along with the kind of infectious energy that appeals to audiences of all ages while keeping singers engaged and entertained.

Who it's for

This is ideal for young choirs (elementary through early middle school) performing in winter or holiday concerts. The unison base with optional harmonization lets you program it for ensembles of any size or experience level. It's also a perennial crowd-pleaser for family shows, community performances, and holiday assemblies.

How to get the most out of it

  • Nail the rhythmic precision of the "alvin" interjections and signature chipmunk moments; they're comedic only if they land together.
  • Keep the tempo bouncy and energetic throughout; any sluggishness drains the novelty and appeal.
  • When singers add the optional second part, maintain clarity between the two lines rather than blending them into a single mass of sound.
  • Work for crisp articulation on short notes and syllables to capture the playful character of the piece.

How to use it

Open your holiday concert with this piece to set a festive, lighthearted tone and immediately win audience goodwill. It pairs well with more traditional carols later in the program, providing comic relief and novelty appeal that balances a longer concert. You might also feature it as a standalone number for school assemblies or community holiday celebrations.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in a fast-moving, syncopated melodic line
  • Articulation control for crisp, playful phrasing
  • Optional two-part coordination and voice independence
  • Ensemble confidence through a familiar, engaging arrangement
