Tom Fettke has spent more than five decades creating choral music rooted in practical classroom and worship needs. His compositional output spans hundreds of works and recordings, with The Majesty and Glory of Your Name becoming a staple in choirs across North America. His influence extends beyond composition; he directed choirs in churches of all sizes for over 30 years, served as choral director and music supervisor for school systems, and shaped modern congregational singing through his editorial work on The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration and The Celebration Hymnal.
Fettke's dual background as both a public school vocal music teacher and church musician informs every piece he writes. His California teaching credential and degrees from Oakland City College and California State University at Hayward grounded him in both pedagogy and musicianship. Now based in Nashville with his wife Jan, Fettke continues to craft music that honors the voice while addressing the real constraints and joys of community singing.
Why we love this
Fettke's setting weaves Morricone's achingly beautiful Gabriel's Oboe into a sacred text, creating something that feels both reverent and cinematic without sacrificing choral accessibility. The piece walks that rare line between artistic substance and genuine singability, demanding musicality from your singers without requiring operatic voices or extreme ranges. Audiences will recognize the famous melody immediately, yet hear it freshly through the lens of spiritual poetry.
What to expect
Intimate and expansive at once. The piece opens with a sense of hushed reverence, drawing listeners into a moment of spiritual encounter. As Morricone's melody unfolds, the music swells with wonder, holding the tension between trembling vulnerability and radiant affirmation. By the close, you're left in quiet contemplation, the famous tune transformed into something sacred.
Who it's for
Choirs seeking a contemporary sacred piece with genuine emotional depth and a melody audiences will carry home. This works for church choirs, school choirs at the concert or festival level, and any ensemble comfortable with four-part writing and text painting.
How to get the most out of it
Balance the soloists (if used) carefully against the four-part texture; this melody thrives when it emerges naturally from the ensemble rather than dominating it.
Shape phrases through dynamics rather than tempo changes. Morricone's music lives in the sustained line, so your choir should breathe together at marked points and sustain tone quality through longer phrases.
Let the text and music inform each other. The poetry paired with the oboe melody deserves clear diction and emotional intention, not just mechanical precision.
Build the arch toward the most climactic moment, then ease back into the tender close. This arc mirrors the arc of the Annunciation narrative itself.
How to use it
This belongs in a Christmas concert as a centerpiece or in a Lessons and Carols program where it can anchor the Annunciation narrative. It also serves beautifully in a spring sacred concert or Easter service exploring themes of promise and hope. The nine pages allow sufficient substance without overwhelming a mixed repertoire.
