More about this title

About the Artist: Kalani

Kalani

Kalani has shaped percussion education through decades of hands-on teaching and curriculum design. He has created over 15 instructional videos spanning congas, bongos, djembe, hand percussion, and drumset, and authored books on several of these instruments through Alfred Music Publishing. He founded Drumlesson.com, an educational platform featured in the New York Times and CNN Live, and directs Drum Camp, a summer program offering instruction in diverse drumming traditions. He has also collaborated with Kaman Music Corporation (Toca/LP) on instrument design and educational programming, serving as one of Toca's primary percussion clinicians.

Kalani's work in recreational and community drumming has earned him recognition from DRUM! Magazine across multiple categories, including Percussion Clinician and Drum Circle Facilitation. He chairs the Percussive Arts Society's Recreational Drumming Committee and serves as Percussion Education Coordinator for Peripole-Bergerault educational instruments. His workshops and presentations have taken him to universities nationwide and international festivals, including the International Percussion Festival in Belgium and the World Rhythm Festival in Seattle.

Why we love this

Kalani brings decades of expertise in making rhythm accessible and joyful to mixed groups of all abilities and backgrounds. This book proves that percussion education doesn't require advanced technique or reading skills; instead, it centers joy, connection, and the visceral pleasure of making sound together. Whether you're building community in a classroom, supporting wellness in a therapy setting, or energizing a team-building session, these games and activities translate immediately into engagement.

What to expect

Step into a room where percussion becomes a language everyone speaks instantly. Laughter, rhythm, and connection replace the pressure of technique or performance; hearts and hands synchronize around simple, infectious grooves that build from one person to a full circle.

Who it's for

This book serves music educators, music therapists, team-building facilitators, and community leaders working with groups of any age or ability level. Anyone seeking to build ensemble cohesion, foster confidence in non-readers, or create joyful, accessible rhythm experiences will find immediate value here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with activities that require no prior drumming experience; Kalani designed these games for genuine inclusion, so jump in without worrying about who has studied percussion before.
  • Use the included CD to hear how each rhythm and activity sounds in practice, then adapt the energy and instrumentation to match your group's size and skill level.
  • Establish clear hand signals or verbal cues before you begin; rhythm games move quickly and thrive when everyone can respond to the same prompt.
  • Invite participants to contribute variations and call-and-response patterns once they've learned the basic groove; this shifts the experience from following instructions to collaborative creation.

How to use it

Weave these activities into ensemble warm-ups to deepen rhythmic awareness and group cohesion before tackling more formal repertoire. Dedicate a full session to Jamnasium games as a health and wellness offering, a team-building workshop, or a culminating celebration where ensemble members experience themselves as creators rather than students.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic listening and response in a group setting
  • Call-and-response participation and call creation
  • Ensemble synchronization without reliance on notation
  • Confidence in sound-making regardless of prior experience
  • Collaborative musicmaking and shared decision-making
