He holds memberships in the American Bandmasters Association and has taught at institutions including James Madison University and the University of Miami. His conducting engagements include regular appearances with all-state ensembles, university groups, and professional orchestras worldwide, with notable guest conducting at the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, and regional music conferences across the United States and internationally.

Why we love this

Balmages strips away the guilt from scales and long tones by anchoring them to grooves that actually hold a tubist's interest. The production quality of these background tracks (techno, R&B, hip-hop, rock) transforms what could be tedious fundamentals work into something a student genuinely wants to practice, which means consistent daily habit formation actually happens. Tuba players at this level rarely see method materials written with this level of musical imagination.

What to expect

Playing along feels like you're in a real band, not isolated in your practice space. The backing tracks carry genuine musicality and production value, so your scales and long tones become part of something larger rather than exercises done in a vacuum.

Who it's for

Tuba students working through scales, long tones, and foundational technique who need real motivation to establish a consistent daily practice routine. This method book appeals equally to younger players building fundamental habits and older students who've lost interest in traditional drill-based materials.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock into the tempo of the backing track by focusing on the pulse rather than fighting it; these tracks are designed with deliberate grooves that reward rhythmic precision
  • Use headphones or a speaker close enough that you hear the full stereo image; the production detail in these backgrounds is part of the pedagogy
  • Record yourself playing along with a few different tracks across a week and listen back to identify which styles reveal your inconsistencies most clearly; that's where your practice focus belongs next

How to use it

Assign this as the core home practice resource for your section during the first weeks of the school year when fundamentals work is heaviest. The variety of musical styles means students can rotate through different tracks across the week, keeping their individual practice fresh while you build consistent long-tone and scale work into the ensemble's overall sound.

Skills your students will build

  • Long-tone control and breath management across extended passages
  • Major and minor scale fluency in multiple keys
  • Rhythmic precision and tempo stability against a click or groove
  • Listening and matching intonation against a harmonic background
  • Consistent daily practice habits through engagement and motivation
